The Liminal Space

Truly transformative change is hard to achieve from within existing organizations, most of which are too deeply invested in current ways of operating. But we cannot ignore today’s realities entirely. The challenge is to create a liminal space that operates as a bridge between the present and the future – beyond the status quo, and yet able to engage with it.

Our interviewees describe a ‘split screen’ perspective – moving in and out of the current system at the same time as creating the conditions for a new system to emerge. Liminal spaces need to be carefully designed to hold unstable groups of people together in the collective pursuit of change
